While forklifts make work easier, they must be used with safety in mind

Industrial workplaces have come to rely on forklift trucks for their ability to lift and transport just about any load around the worksite.

While this has made certain processes easier and safer, forklifts create other safety risks.

"Often when employees grow accustomed to using forklifts they tend to stop thinking of them as a safety hazard, and forget or neglect to follow some important operating and maintenance procedures," according to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). "When forklift injuries occur, they're usually serious given the tremendous weight of those powerful machines.

To help avoid forklift fatalities in the workplace, follow these 18 effective forklift safety tips:

Conduct proper operator training. Wear proper clothing. Know what forklift class you are using. Inspect the equipment daily. Install and maintain safety guards. Never modify the fork truck. Maintain 360 degrees visibility. Use proper lighting Implement floor marking system. Never carry extra people. Be mindful of the capacity of the forklift. Check on the forklift's stability. Ensure care when loading and unloading trailers. Drive the forklift at its appropriate speed. Maintain a safe operating distance. Handle loads properly. Park the forklift properly at the end of the shift. Keep the work environment clean and clear from obstructions.
