For the fourth consecutive NASCAR Cup Series road course race and the second consecutive race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, it was Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott taking the checkered flag in front of the rest of the field.
After crashing last year and coming back to win the Bank of America Roval 400, Elliott was again put in position to have to rally back this year, this time due to a loose wheel that was discovered before a restart.
An unexpected pit stop sent him to the back of the pack, but utilizing strong pace in his #9 Chevrolet and a few late caution flag periods, he was able to take back the lead and pull away from the rest of the field.
Elliott led 27 laps of this 109-lap race around the 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) roval in Concord, North Carolina en route to a 3.895-second victory over Team Penske's Joey Logano in second place behind the wheel of his #22 Ford.
This win is the ninth of Elliott's career, a and it is his fifth on a road course. Logano's runner-up result was his best finish since he won at Phoenix Raceway back in early March. Elliott had never won a race with a Ford driver finishing in second place until today.
Joe Gibbs Racing's Erik Jones led the Toyota drivers in third place behind the wheel of his #20 Toyota ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing's Kurt Busch in fourth behind the wheel of his #1 Chevrolet and Team Penske's Ryan Blaney in fifth behind the wheel of his #12 Ford.
This race featured 17 lead changes among 11 leaders. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron, who tied Elliott for the most laps led with 27, finished in sixth place behind the wheel of his #24 Chevrolet.
Joe Gibbs Racing's Martin Truex Jr., Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman, Stewart-Haas Racing rookie Cole Custer and Stewart-Haas Racing's Clint Bowyer rounded out the top 10 in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place behind the wheels of their #19 Toyota, #88 Chevrolet, #41 Ford and #14 Ford, respectively.
With this race being the third and final race of the round of 12 of the playoffs, four more drivers have been eliminated. All four of those drivers, Bowyer, Joe Gibbs Racing's Kyle Busch, Richard Childress Racing's Austin Dillon and Stewart-Haas Racing's Aric Almirola, began the race below the round of 8 cut line.
